Speedskating: Kazakhstan wins worlds first time

Denis Kuzin of Kazakhstan won the gold medal at the Speedskating World Cup on Friday. This was the first time an athlete from Kazakhstan won a speedskating worlds gold, Vesti.kz reports. Kuzin won the 1,000m race in Sochi. He covered the distance in 1 minute and 9.14 seconds. South Korean Mo Tae-bum won the second place being only one-tenth of a second behind the Kazakhstan leader. American Shani Davis won the bronze medal being six-hundredths of a second behind Mo. The competition was not an easy one: Davis is a three-time world champion, and Mo led the most of the race. Kuzin came out in the last 400 meters. He showed the fastest time of 26.6 second in the last 400 meters. Kuzin also competed at the 1,500m distance, but was only 18th. After the victory Kuzin said that he was planning to finish his career because of the serious injury that he got before the season started - he broke his shoulder last summer. "I wanted to resign before the season. After surgery I was told I have no chance of coming back into sports but I began to work and reached my goal. I will come back to Sochi next year, hoping to win again," the sportsman said. Kuzin was coached for the worlds by the famous Russian sprinter Sergey Klevcheni. The last time a Kazakhstan speed skaters climbed the Speedskating World Cup pedestal was in 1996 when Lyudmila Prokasheva won bronze at the 3,000m distance.
